Coins^2

Speaking of the Channel islands, I’ve just found one in the collection.  Not only is it from Guernsey but it’s a bit different too.  Can’t believe I hadn’t noticed it earlier, there can’t be many square coins about.  Two monarchs on this one, the Queen on one side, William the Conqueror on the other, nice coin.

Something Fishy

Cool, check these out, could be the oldest ever ‘coins.’ seems like coins were fish and bells and all sorts originally.  Only problem is that these are from a couple of thousand years ago.  That’s an awful lot of history.  Definitely think I may have bitten off more than I can chew here, this is endless. This could take my whole life.  I simply hadn’t realised how many coins there are in the world, let alone how many there have been.  Feeling a bit daunted, really. I had thought that perhaps I should start more modern and work my way back but even that is a massive prospect.  Anyone care to help me out?  Anyone got some intriguing coin facts or can suggest anything I could look out for?

Thrupenny Bits

Right then, what next.  I kind of like the unusual ones, with fancy inserts and odd shapes but he didn’t seem to have that many of those.  Thought I’d just found a cool one but my mother’s laughter told me otherwise. Turns out it wasn’t a special edition or anything and there used to be a 12 sided coin, there really was a 3 pence coin and they are one and the same. Clearly I have a lot to learn.  Maybe I should do that before heading any further.

Triangular

Next one is not only cool and super shiny but it’s in a fancy box so I had better treat it with care.  It’s obviously supposed to be a Bermuda Triangle, wonder why it’s not got pointy angles? Either way, great shape. Always secretly loved Geometry as a subject.

Coloured Coinage

So here we go, my first post on coins.  I’ve decided to go with a colourful one, though to be honest, I didn’t know they made them in colour.  Don’t know what happened in Cuba in 1995 to want to make this coin but isn’t one peso worth almost nothing?

Coins

Sadly, my grandfather died a few months back and the one thing that I inherited from him is a pretty massive (to my eyes) coin collection. Truth be told, I’ve never been that into it myself, but as I start to look at what he had, I’m slowly starting to get caught up in it.

Clearly, I’m new to all this, but thought I’d put this blog together to represent my journey into the world of numismatics.  If anyone out there is an expert in this field, then you my want to look away, but in time I’ll hopefully get up to speed and not embarrass myself too badly. Maybe I was asking for trouble coming up with the rather pretentious name Principia Numismatica.
